Billing and Insurance

Generally, students will not incur significant out-of-pocket costs when they use Duquesne University Health Services (DUHS). It remains important, however, to have health insurance that has comprehensive medical coverage in the Pittsburgh area. Students and parents are encouraged to consider enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Program. Any other insurance that was approved for waiver, must be aware of their coverage for the area. 

Contact your insurance carrier to find out if you have comprehensive coverage in Pittsburgh, PA. Area providers and Duquesne University Health Services will bill for services, and you will be solely responsible for those medical expenses your insurance does not cover.

Students have access to the following services at DUHS for which their personal health insurance is not billed.These services will have an out-of-pocket cost for students and DUHS does not submit these charges to students' personal health insurance.

  •  Allergy injections
  • Tuberculosis skin testing
  • Over-the-counter medications and starter packs for prescription drugs
  • Health history and immunization record compliance
  • Travel medicine consultation with Center for Pharmacy Care staff
  • Public health services or benefits that are essential for either the personal safety of an individual student or for overall campus safety
  • Physical exams that require completion of a health questionnaire for participation in club sport athletics, clinical rotations, internships, employment physicals, PA Driver Licenses
  • Blood titers                                                                            

Except for Medicare, certain other government-provided health insurance, and any accident/death insurance,  Duquesne University Health Services will submit charges for eligible services, including charges for physician, mid-level practitioner and nurse visits, to students' health insurance plans. The services for which insurance is billed include:     

  • Evaluation and treatment of illness and or injury
  • General health and wellness consultations with appropriate referral as necessary
  • Continuation of care for chronic diseases
  • Annual physical exams / preventive care (provided under variety of insurance providers deemed as a covered benefit)
  • Routine well-woman care and well-male care
  • Minor procedures
  • Medical evaluations for behavioral health care services
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Other services and supplies as determined by DUHS

Any charges not covered by students' personal health insurance plans, due to health services not being an in network participating provider OR due to any cost sharing required by their insurance (except copays) will be solely the responsibility of the student or guardian. Also, any invoices deemed as your financial obligation from outside providers,such as Quest labs, will not be the responsiblity of Health Services. Students are asked to be aware of their insurance companies policies and what is covered.

There are also circumstances where, upon approval by the account manager and director, charges may not be billed to a student's insurance.
