Complex Challenge of Poverty to be Addressed by Experts, Scholars

What: Poverty and its correlating issues-unemployment, hunger, addiction, eviction and homelessness-disproportionally affect children, their families, the elderly, minorities and persons with disabilities. COVID-19 has devastated the international economy and has disproportionately affected the poor.

The Face of the Person Who is Poor, the 12th annual McGinley-Rice Symposium on Social Justice for Vulnerable Populations, will address how poverty affects everyone, not just those who are poor, because the cries of the poor touch each of us.

It will be held virtually and is hosted by the Duquesne University School of Nursing.

The symposium schedule is available here. Among this year's participants are:
• Sister Donna Markham, O.P., president and chief executive officer of Catholic Charities USA
• The Rev. David Beckmann, president emeritus of Bread for the World
• Charlie Batch and Latasha Wilson Batch, founder and executive director of Best of the Batch Foundation
• Pamela Maraldo, executive director of Girls Inc. of New York City.

Some of the topics to be discussed include Falling in the Gap: Poverty and Food Insecurity in College Students; Outcomes of Poverty; Lessons from the Catholic Worker for Medical Care; Latinx Community Mobilization in the Face of COVID-19; and Living at the Bottom.

Duquesne University has stood up for the health and economic well-being of people and communities on the margins for more than 140 years.

When: Thursday, Oct. 21, and Friday, Oct. 22.
